Bethany hadn’t slept a wink last night. Her mind kept going in circles over and over her need to pay Hinky Dink back and her son leaving school to help with the wages she brought in. She needed to pay Hinky Dink back as soon as possible now. She couldn’t work for a man like him. A man who thought it no great consequence to ask a respectable woman, down on her luck, to do something despicable like that. The Ball was in four days and Hinky Dink would want either his money or her consent by Monday and she couldn’t consent.

“He says I’m not to give you food anymore,” Dalia the cook said. She dusted flour from her hands and smack the back of a kitchen maids head. “Watch the potatoes!” She rolled her eye heavenwards to show her exasperation to Bethany. “He’s a stinker.”

“It’s no less than I expected of him,” Bethany sighed. She hadn’t had any dinner the previous evening and breakfast was impossible now. Bethany would have to use some of her precious pennies to buy a loaf of bread from the baker down the street for lunch if she didn’t want to collapse on the saloon floor.

Bethany picked up a tray of eggs and toast for a customer, her stomach rumbling audibly. She placed the breakfast in front of the two gentlemen then turned with her cleaning rag to clear the tables that had recently been emptied. It was the lull between the breakfast and the lunch rush.

Bethany sat down behind the bar to rest her weary feet. She noticed a dirty glass on the bar on top of the newspaper and clucked in annoyance. Terry might be a good man but he was sloppy and didn’t mind leaving dirty glasses around for Bethany to take care of. She cleaned the glass and put it away then retrieved the paper. She was about to put it away for Terry’s use when something caught her eye.

It was stuck between two large advertisements for soap and gentlemen’s trousers, a tiny advert declaring the urgent need for a bride.
